One of Los Angeles’ most sought-after fitness experts, Bob Harper became a household name after The Biggest Loser show took to the airwaves in October 2004.

As a team trainer for the show, he’s helped dozens of people lose thousands of pounds and win thousands of dollars. He gives these weight loss tips to people who want to become thinner and healthier.

Banish the word diet. “I hate that word. It makes people feel hungry and deprived.”

Start today. “Don’t say, ‘I’ll wait until after my birthday, or I’ll start on Monday.’ Today, is the first day of the rest of your life.”

Begin by making small changes. “Tell yourself, I’m not going to eat fast food today. I am going to eat breakfast.”

Take it one day at a time. “If you set a date by which to lose 10, 20, or 200 pounds, you’ll be intimidated. You probably will give up.”

Get educated. “Read nutrition information. Learn what’s in the foods you eat, and what foods make a healthful diet.”

Count calories. “I’m a calorie guy. You need to keep track of the calories you are eating.”

Eat a balanced diet. “We all need proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in our diets.”

Get active. “Go to the gym or walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes each day. Sure, you’re going to hurt. That’s okay. I hurt all the time.”

Keep a journal. “Losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight is all about balancing the calories you take in with the calories you put out.”

Remember there is no end date. “You’re not going to change your exercise and eating habits for a certain period of time. You’re going to make changes for the rest of your life.” [via]
