Oprah Winfrey + hypnosis = weight loss? Some people just never learn. Oprah Winfrey’s detox diet has failed rather spectacularly to produce any meaningful weight-loss results, so instead of learning from that experience and her other attempts to make diet fads work for her, Oprah doubles down on another weight-loss fad – hypnotherapy.
Oprah Winfrey’s hypnosis hypothesis I obviously do not know what Oprah is thinking, but she must be thinking something like this: Well, let’s see, British hypnotherapist Susan Hepburn claims that she has helped Lily Allen lose 25 pounds by using the power of suggestion to force her subconscious mind to reject junk food and enormous portions. I need to lose at least 40 pounds, and my mind is open to any weight-loss claims, no matter how dumb they sound – she can definitely help me lose weight. Awesome! I will invite her to my show.
Why Oprah Winfrey’s hypnosis is not going to help her lose weight “The aim is to declutter the mind and get her to visualize her ideal size. Hypnotherapy deals with whatever triggers someone to start eating when they’re stressed or bored. She’ll be asked to imagine her perfect body rather than focus on any negative associations she has with her figure. She literally thinks herself slimmer!” says Hepburn.
Think herself slimmer? Are you kidding me? Is she saying that people get fat because they are thinking fat thoughts? What you put in your mouth does not matter? You can eat 5,000 calories a day and not get fat, if you think about yourself as, say, a skinny supermodel?
“This is not about taking up the latest diet. All she has to do is eat healthy, low-fat, fresh food while ensuring she chews her food slowly so that the stomach is tricked into thinking it’s full when it isn’t.” says Hepburn.
Right, sure, a hypnotherapist is now a weight-loss expert. Maybe next time Oprah should go to a chiropractor who specializes in adjusting your spine, you know, so that it is strong enough to increase her metabolism or something. [via]
