Born in California and raised in Hawaii, professional surfer Laird Hamilton is a close friend of the deep blue sea.
With his 6-3 frame, he has conquered the most tremendous and challenging waves everywhere from Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef.
Not only has Laird been featured in prestigious publications like National Geographic, Sports Illustrated and The Surfer’s Journal, he is also made his way into film production as an executive producer for Sony Pictures Classics’ film Riding Giants.
Despite his adventures antics, Laird is a focused family man married to model and volleyball star Gabrielle Reece, and father of two-year-old Reece Viola.
To maintain a balance between work and his family, Laird calls his workouts “an essential part of sanity,” explaining that physical and mental health are unquestionably linked and extremely important.

When the 42-year-old is not surfing, his typical day consists of two hours of circuit training, three miles of surfboard paddling, hill climbing with 50 lbs. strapped to his mountain bike and walks on the beach, dragging a log harness to him.

He believes in sports-specific training, which works muscles used for a particular sport. He notes, however, that it is important to strengthen your weak areas and maintain hard-earned muscle, as well.

“You eat potato chips, you’re going to perform like a potato chip,” Laird says. He does not ditch comfort foods altogether, but recommends eating them in moderation.
