People who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are convinced that at least one aspect of their appearance is hideous – even despite repeated cosmetic surgery, in many cases.
Now, research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has found that people with body dysmorphic disorder process visual information differently than others do.
People with and without the disorder looked at digital images of faces. Brain scans showed that relative to the others, those with body dysmorphic disorder relied more on the analytical left side of the brain, even when looking at blurry photographs that generally require more holistic right-brain activity.
