Young participants in sports that emphasize weight such as wrestling, ballet and gymnastics are likely to indulge in unhealthy weight-control behavior including dieting, taking pills and inducing vomiting.

Also, steroid use was more prevalent in both males and females participating in such weight-sensitive sports compared with sports wherein weight is less of an issue.

Males in the study, also conducted at the University of Minnesota, were likely to induce vomiting and use diuretics to control their weight; females in the study favored laxatives, steroid use and also self-induced vomiting.
