White Carbohydrates

White carbohydrates – healthy or not? White carbohydrates are healthy. White carbohydrates are unhealthy. White carbohydrates should be a part of your diet. White carbohydrates should not be a part of your diet. Clearly, when it comes to white carbohydrates, there are a lot of opinions out there. Why? Because white carbohydrates are controversial, but what is the truth? Should you avoid them at all costs?

The truth is that there is no easy answer. It all depends. What does it depend on? The answer depends on many individual factors, but here is how I see it. All things being equal, there is no reason to fear or avoid at all costs white carbohydrates. Some would say that the whole slow carbs fast carbs thingy is overrated. In reality, there is a pretty substantial difference between slow digesting carbs and fast digesting carbs, but we need to keep in mind that regardless of the type of carbs we are talking about, they are still carbs.

To make things as simple as possible, I think of white carbs as sugar. Why? Because, essentially, that is what they are – sugar. All carbs, slow or fast, convert to sugar, but white carbs convert to sugar a lot faster than other types of carbs. If you are overweight and need to lose weight, in my opinion, it is a good idea to avoid all white carbs. If you are not overweight and do not need to lose weight, consuming white carbs in moderation is not likely to lead to a weight gain.

Now, the good news is that there are certain instances when white carbs can be beneficial. After a workout, a lot of fitness experts recommend consuming a mix of fast protein (whey protein) and fast carbs. The purpose of this drink is to help your muscle recover after a workout. The same thing can be accomplished by simply eating a white bread turkey sandwich or drinking a glass of chocolate milk.
