What is Kefir?
Have you heard of kefir? Maybe you have, but what exactly is kefir? Kefir means “good feeling” in Turkish, which is what this food claims will happen to you once you eat it. Much like yogurt, it is a cultured food sometimes made with cow’s milk but also made with seed milk.
Similar in consistency to yogurt, kefir is rich in gut-friendly micro-organisms. If you have problems digesting milk sugars (lactose intolerance), kefir is for you since the yeast and friendly bacteria pre-digest most of the lactose. Many people find they can tolerate kefir when they can’t tolerate any other dairy foods. [source: Oxygen]
