What is Body Composition?
Continued from Better Workout by the Numbers.
Body Composition How much of you is made of fat and how much of you is made of muscle and everything else.
How it’s measured The gold standard is a hydrostatic tank in which you’re weighed underwater, but most gyms use a caliper to take a series of skin-fold measurements.
Some gyms use a bioimpedance meter, which sends electrical currents through your body, but the caliper test, which is available at pretty much every gym for $10-$20, is accurate enough for most people.
How it’s used For men 20-60 the healthy body-fat range is between 8 and 22 percent. To reduce your number, focus on burning calories with cardio and building metabolism-boosting muscle with weight training.
