What Is a Cosmeceutical?

What Is a Cosmeceutical?“Cosmeceuticals are cosmetics that may have pharmaceutical or drug-like properties,” said Dr. Diane S. Berson, FAAD, at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.

“Like cosmetics, cosmeceuticals are applied just to the surface of the skin, but instead of only covering up a problem, they may be able to fix it.”

Cosmeceuticals have a gamut of ingredients, but the most effective are the ones that combine more than one:

Antioxidants. These build a barrier to protect your skin against smoke and sun damage. They are best used from an early age and will help minimize wrinkles and fine lines.

Growth Factors. These came as the result of years of wound treatment. Researchers have found that these compounds help produce and distribute collagen and elastin, which can tighten the skin.

Hydroxy Acids. The future of this compound is poly hydroxy acids, which bring moisture to the skin and can make it shiny and smooth.

Botanicals. Usually plant-based, these have anti-inflammatory properties, which, according to Berson, are helpful for people with rosacea, sensitive skin or sun damage.

Peptides. Proteins that stimulate the production of collagen and are helpful to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. [sources: SF Chron., YH]
