What Causes Puffy Eyes?
The swelling around our eyes is often caused by too much salt or alcohol, crying, not enough sleep, and certain allergies. Since all of these things are basically irritants they cause excess fluid to build up under the skin.
The fluid retention is common in other parts of the body, but it is most visible under eyes and on eyelids. Some experts, however, dismiss the notion that salty foods and alcohol cause puffy eyes.
They claim that toxins in cosmetics are the most common cause of allergies, which cause puffy eyes and other health problems. Here are some top concerns:
Coal Tar – used in hair dyes.
Alpha Hydroxe Acids – popular products that promise smoother, younger-looking skin.
Phthalates – industrial plasticizers found in nail polish and fragrance.
Fragrance – one of the worst, a fragrance can contain hundreds of ingredients that are common allergens.
Petroleum Distillates – already off limits in Europe, petroleums are not only a possible carcinogen but may also cause a strong allergic reaction. [sources: Allure, Your Health]
