Weight Training for Weight Loss

If you are overweight and have been looking for an excuse not to lift weights, you are wasting your time. You do not need to lift weights to lose weight, but weight training for weight loss does work.
A new study in the journal Cell Metabolism adds further credence to the claim. When researchers caused obese mice to grow muscle, they found that the “genetically reprogrammed” rodents lost fat and showed signs of metabolic improvement.
The study suggests that replacing fat with type II muscle (fast-twitch fibers), the kind common in people who lift weights, helps fire up the metabolism and may over time reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension and cancer. [source: M&F]
