Weak Ankles

I have quite weak ankles; they click a lot when I climb stairs and so on. Will running strengthen them, or is it better to find a lower impact exercise to keep in shape? Louisa. [via Ask Questions]

Just because your ankles click a lot does not necessarily mean that you have weak ankles. But if you really do have weak ankles, I do not think running is a good exercise for you. In addition, even if you do not have weak ankles, running is still a high-impact exercise that could eventually damage your ankles.

So yes, if you have weak ankles, you need to find a low-impact exercise. What are your choices? There are a number of exercises to choose from. For example: cycling, walking, rollerblading and skiing are all great exercises. In addition, you can try squats – start by doing squats with your bodyweight only, if your ankles feel okay, add light weights.
