Waist Measurements

Waist Measurements

I hate waist measurements. Why? Because waist measurements are not only tricky, waist measurements are evil. That’s right, many women are more obsessed with measuring their waist size than with checking their weight. You do not believe me, do you? But it is true, according to a recent study that polled more than 3,000 women, 85 percent of women said that they are more concerned with the size of their waist than with their body weight or the size of their breasts.

Speaking of weight, according to another study, the size of your waist is important, because it seems to predict better than your body weight your overall fitness level. So could it be that women are on to something? Should they focus on their waist size? The answer is no and here is why.

Studies are important, there is doubt about that, but waist measurements are misleading. What is wrong with waist measurements and why are they misleading? Because it is wrong to focus on just one aspect of your physical appearance. And it is definitely wrong to rely on waist measurements to judge how fit you are.

You can have a small waist and be overweight at the same time. You can have a small waist and be undernourished. You can have a big waist and be underweight. Do you see where am I going with this? It is all about the balance – waist measurements do not tell the whole story, it is just one aspect that needs to be considered when you evaluate your body composition.

So what about celebrities? I bet they are just obsessed with their waist measurements as the rest of us. Are they? Yes, they are.

Kelly Ripa The 5-foot-3 Kelly, 38, has a 24-inch waist. She maintains her tiny waist with regular ballet barre classes at NYC’s Physique 57. She says that the classes are “the love of my life” and that “if you keep in motion, you can eat anything in moderation,” which sounds confusing, if you ask me. If, in fact, you really do eat in moderation, you can eat anything you want anyway, ballet barre classes or not.

Lauren Conrad The 5-foot-6 Lauren, 23, has a 25-inch waist. “It is better for me to eat small things all day rather than just several big meals,” says Conrad. She believes this plan helps keep her waistline in check.

Scarlett Johansson The 5-foot-4 Johansson, 24, has a 27-inch waist. “I try to stay fit and eat healthily, but I am not anxious to starve myself and become unnaturally thin,” she says.

Megan Fox “I do have a 22-inch waist, I will say that,” the 5-foot-5 Megan, 22, recently dished. How does she stay so svelte? “An immense amount of Pilates,” she says.
