Vitamin D and CancerHere’s another reason to get a daily dose of vitamin D: According to a new report from the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego, taking 2,000 IUs of this antioxidant daily can cut your risk of breast cancer by half and your risk of colorectal cancer by two thirds. Researcher Cedric Garland, Dr.P.H., suggests you eat vitamin D-rich foods such as:

  • Salmon (360 IUs per 3.5-ounce serving)
  • Milk (98 IUs per 8-ounce serving)
  • Fortified margarine (60 IUs per tablespoon)
  • Fortified cereals (40 IUs per cup)
  • Eggs (20 IUs each)

In addition, one tablespoon of cod liver oil (also available as a capsule) provides 1,360 IUs. Consult with a doctor before taking it, since it can interact with some medications. If you prefer a supplement, Garland recommends looking for one that contains cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is the most potent form of vitamin D.

Sunning your arms and legs for 10 to 15 minutes (without sunscreen) may get you up to 15,000 IUs of vitamin D, says Garland. To avoid burning, go outside for five minutes at a time and wear a hat to shield your face. [source: Natural Health]
