Types of Vegetarian Diets

There are many types of vegetarian diets. But when it comes to the different types of vegetarian diets, there is still a lot of confusion and misunderstanding going on. How do you distinguish between all these different types of vegetarian diets? And why is it that most people do not seem to know which types of vegetarian diets exist today?
The short answer to these questions is simple: The general perception seems to be that vegetarian diets are very popular, but just how popular are they? They are popular in certain segments of the population and in certain parts of the country. However, for the most part, they are still out of mainstream.
So, let’s try to clear out some confusion by looking at the different types of vegetarian diets:
Vegans The most strict, as this regimen avoids all foods of animal origin consuming only plant sources of protein. Soy products are typically part of the diet.
Lacto-vegetarians Dairy products are included, but no eggs, meat, fish or poultry. Note that meat refers to beef, lamb, pork and veal. This diet may not be necessarily low in fat unless skim or low fat dairy products are consumed.
Ovo-vegetarians Eggs are included as a protein, but no dairy, meat, fish or poultry.
Lacto-Ovo-vegetarians Dairy products and eggs are included, but no meat, fish or poultry.
Pesco-vegetarian Includes fish, dairy products and eggs, but no meat or poultry.
Semi-vegetarian The most common type; those who eat dairy products, eggs, fish and chicken, but no meat.
Why different types of vegetarian diets are confusing Do you see now why these diets are confusing? It is hard to pronounce most of these names, let alone remember them all and understand what they allow you or do not allow you to eat. It would be so much easier if we only had to deal with two types of vegetarian diets – vegans and vegetarians.
