Treatment for Oily Skin

Treatment for Oily Skin

Oil production slows in the wintertime for all skin types. So even people with oily skin may need to reduce the strength and frequency of some treatments to prevent dry ness on cheeks (where there are fewer oil glands).

1. Wash your forehead, nose, and chin with a cleanser with 2 percent salicylic acid, then use a milder, basic one on your cheeks. If you usually use a toner, put it away – it is too drying (and unnecessary) in the winter.

2. Even if you normally skip moisturizer, you may need one now. A lightweight, oil-free lotion delivers hydration without causing greasiness – look for one with lactic acid, which helps keep pores clear. Start with daily application and work up to twice daily if necessary. If your T-zone feels dry, dab the moisturizer there, too.

3. Smooth on a primer labeled “mattifying,” “oil control,” or “shine control” before foundation. This will absorb excess oil and help your makeup last.

4. Once a week, use a drying mask with 2 percent salicylic acid or 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide to help unclog pores. Or look for a mud or clay mask that contains sulfur, which helps absorb sebum.

5. Exfoliate no more than once a week – try an at-home peel with 10 percent glycolic acid. If cheeks begin to feel dry, apply it just on your forehead, nose, and chin. [source: Allure]
