Tom Cruise is backing a Scientology-based detox program aimed at rescue workers who cleaned up after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The New York Post is reporting that Tom will host a fund-raising gala to raise money for the controversial New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project, which offers treatments to firefighters, police and other rescue workers exposed to toxins at Ground Zero.

The regimen includes taking high doses of niacin, ingesting cold-pressed oil, and sweating off toxins in a sauna set at 140 to 180 degrees for up to five hours a day. While some 9/11 heroes claim the program has helped them, credible experts dismiss the program’s effectiveness. [via: OK!]
