The Bikini Line: Wax, Laser, or Electrolysis?

The Bikini Line: Wax, Laser, or Electrolysis?Although most people are apt to just pick up a razor and go, aesthetician Mzia Shiman of OC61 Salon and Spa in NYC explains some of your other options for that perfect bikini line.

Laser: When the method of a laser beam destroying hair follicles was first introduced, it was not always effective. Now, although still very pricey, it’s yielding better results and gaining more popularity.

Lasts? It takes about six to 10 treatments before all the hair is removed, and then usually requires a “touch-up” a year later before it’s permanent.

Pain factor? Feels like a rubber band flicking you. Ask about numbing cream you can apply beforehand.

Wax: This is probably the most popular and convenient of the three. Wax is applied directly to the skin and then pulled off with the entire hair (including the root) attached. This makes the hair weaker and thinner.

Lasts? Three to four weeks (eventually some hair won’t grow back).

Pain factor? Some find waxing extremely painful. If you take an ibuprofen a half hour before your appointment, it should help!

Electrolysis: A specialist inserts a tiny needle into the hair follicle and a current is released. Since each hair is treated individually, this process is time consuming, and technicians usually charge by the hour. It has been proven to be the most effective form of permanent hair removal.

Lasts? Most hairs don’t grow back once they are zapped.

Pain factor? You won’t feel the needle (since it’s smaller than your pore), but you’ll feel the current. It feels like someone is pricking you with a pin. [via]
