Despite this, Proctor & Gamble’s testosterone patch that was developed to improve sex drive in woman failed the get FDA approval.

The FDA said that the researchers did not prove that the drug was safe (the product was granted approval in Europe).

Now doctors are prescribing off-label testosterone treatments to improve libido, arousal and orgasm.

There are a few options – testosterone creams applied to genital areas of the skin, pills, or drops taken under the tongue. What is not recommended for women are testosterone patches that designed for men.

Men’s patches contain testosterone in much higher doses – sometimes 2.5 times higher – than what women need.

To accommodate the requests of women seeking testosterone, some doctors are using compounding pharmacies and labs that custom mix creams to get the right dosage.

Other doctors prescribe small amounts of Androgen, a testosterone gel that can be rubbed into the skin. [source: FitnessRx for women]
