Sun Damage: Skin

Despite all the warnings about sun damage, Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Ronald Moy says that the number-one thing people still do wrong when it comes to their skin is not wearing sunscreen. Here are his tips for protecting your skin.

Choose sunscreen that blocks UVA rays. Dr. Moy recommends Neutrogena, Aveeno and Remergent.

Get the highest SPF available. Whether it is 70 or 50, aim high.

Prep your skin. Apply sunscreen half an hour before sun exposure.

Know when to reapply. On a regular day, apply once or twice. If you are sweating or swimming, reapply every two to three hours.

Check your moles. Look for change in size, color or diameter. See if it looks different
than other moles on your body.

See your doctor. If you have no family history of skin cancer, visit the dermatologist once a year; if you do, go every six months.

Know the risks. Once you have had a cancerous mole, you have a 30-percent chance that another will develop within five years.

Load up on antioxidants. Colorful fruits and veggies that have been shown to reduce risks of certain cancers can also reduce your risk for skin cancer. [source: OK!]
