Skipping Meals to Lose Weight

Continued from It Takes 3,500 Calories to Lose 1 Pound.

It seems logical that skipping meals would promote weight loss, but I have heard that eating more often is better. Which is right? People give all kinds of excuses for skipping meals, including that it saves calories. As a general habit, skipping or skimping on meals catches up with you.

Regular meals help keep your blood glucose levels stable, which helps you concentrate and be more productive. Plus, skipping meals usually leads to overeating at snack time or the next meal, making it harder to lose weight.

Research confirms that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight than those who eat it regularly. Eating three meals (plus snacks, if needed) will give you more energy and help control your appetite.

I love peanut butter. Do I have to give it up forever to lose weight? No, you do not. One food by itself does not cause weight gain, but any food can be a problem if you eat too much of it. All foods can fit into a weight-loss meal plan. Peanut butter contains a lot of calories because it is about 75 percent fat. So, eat it in moderation. Occasionally spread a tablespoon (about 100 calories) on whole grain toast or apple slices.
