Proteus Syndrome The disease that immortalized Joseph Merrick as the “Elephant Man” is a congenital disorder that creates abnormal growth of the bones, skin, head, hands and feet.
The syndrome is often accompanied by tumors over large portions of the body. Doctors are able to remove some of the tumors, but there is no known cure.
Only around 200 cases of the syndrome have been reported since it was first discovered in 1979.
