Pessimists Lose Weight Better

Just when I was trying to wrap my mind around this whole Secret thingy – you know, that New Age nonsense about the power of intention wishful thinking – I have read that when it comes to weight loss, it is better to stick with, well, negative thinking.

Pessimists may have an advantage when it comes to weight loss, say researchers at the University of Bath in England. In a recent study, people who pictured what they’d look like if they failed to maintain an exercise program were more likely to stick with it than those who envisioned themselves successful.

“Fear can motivate you to take action,” says study co-author Brett Martin, a professor of consumer behavior. If your workout resolve wanes, imagine yourself carrying extra pounds. After that, you won’t be able to lace up your sneakers fast enough. [source: Shape]
