New York City Bans Trans Fats

New York City Bans Trans FatsRestaurant industry is not happy, fast-food restaurants are complaining, but this is great news from New York. NYC health board has banned the use of oils containing trans fats.

“The board, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance.

Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008.

See ya! It is about time. Trans fats are nasty, there is just nothing good about them. High sugar consumption has been linked to a number of diseases, but at least it tastes good. Trans fats have nothing going for them, not even a good taste.

I've read in at least two places that even non-trans fats become trans fats (or something very similar) when they're heated to a high temp (like for deep frying). If this is true, either the NYC health board doesn't know what they're talking about, or they're trying to *look* like they're doing something for the people of NYC when they're actually misleading unsuspecting citizens.

Trans fats can occur naturally in very small amounts, that is true, but the oils that they use now have been hydrogenated, a process which adds hydrogen to oil to make it more stable. Unfortunately, hydrogenation creates trans fats.

There are plenty of oils out there which they can use. It is a food safety issue. We do not want to have E. coli or salmonella in our food, right? Why would we want trans fats?
