Natural Sources of Creatine
Continued from Creatine Facts and Information.
Creatine is formed in the body from the amino acids glycine, arginine, and methionine. After production, creatine is transported to the heart, brain, and muscles with 95 percent of bodily stores remaining in skeletal muscle.
Muscle stores represent a balanced equilibrium with creatine and with phosphocreatine, a reservoir of phosphate that retains energy for muscle contractions.
Phosphocreatine provides energy to muscle via a process called dephosphorylation, which donates a phosphate to adenosine diphosphate (ADP), producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the predominant energy source for the body.
