My Daughter Needs to Lose Weight

Hello I have a 7 year old daughter who is overweight, she weighs about 90 pounds. She just loves to eat. It’s hard because she has asthma from being a premature baby. At birth she only weighed 1 pound and 7 ounces. I was only 24 weeks pregnant when she was born. It’s hard for her to do a lot of running around. I can tell she is so uncomfortable. I’m so lost I really don’t know what to do. I want my daughter to be comfortable with herself, she is way to young to be dealing with this. Please help me. I don’t know what else to do! Thank you for your time. Debbie B. [via Ask Questions]

The best recommendation I can give you is probably something you already know. Your daughter needs to follow a balanced diet. Other than that, I cannot give you any specifics because I am not a doctor and your daughter has a number of medical conditions. Talk to her doctor. Do not change her diet on your own. Her doctor should be able to recommend a diet that will help her lose weight without putting her overall health in danger.

    Hi Debbie,

It is really tough when you have a young child dealing with a weight problem, but I have to say that it is only a symptom of something else going on in her young life that has her reaching for unhealthy foods.

I recommend you continue to praise her for any efforts and to get outdoors and do some basic walking together. It is great for stress, improves mood and if you do it regularly, will work towards resetting the thermostat that regulates how we hold onto fat.

Stay positive and don’t frustrate yourself, just support her in any way you can.

    Best of Luck!
    Terri
