Why would you need milk alternatives? Different people have different reasons for seeking and using milk alternatives. Some people are simply allergic to milk. Others seem to think that milk is not as nutritious as we have been led to believe. In fact, I happened to think that regular, conventional milk (the one you can buy at your local supermarket) is probably bad for you.
It is worth noting that the case for not using cow’s milk is not as straightforward as, say, for losing 10 pounds to improve your health. Just do not do anything crazy, i.e., trying to lose 10 pounds in 3 days is not going to improve your health, it is going to be a rather frustrating experience. Whether or not mil is healthy or not is an ongoing debate, but if you have made up your mind on this subject and do not know what to use instead, here are my top picks: Rice milk, hemp milk, soy milk, almond milk and coconut milk.
None of these milk alternatives are perfect. For example, rice and soy milk are often fortified with unnecessary supplements, and the added sugar is really not something you need either. Almond milk does not taste like milk, but if you enjoy the nutty flavor, you will probably like it. Coconut milk contains too much fat to be a real alternative to regular milk.
Hemp milk, however, is relatively low in calories and high in omega-3s and other important nutrients. I like the plain version. It tastes great, contains no gluten, soy, cholesterol or added sugar. You might want to give it a try. Have I missed other alternatives to milk? Feel free to let me know in the comments section below.
