Hi! I need to lose 40 pounds in 5 months. Is it possible to lose 40 pounds in 5 months? I weigh about 155 pounds and trust me I know it’s unhealthy. I really need to lose about 40 pounds not only for my health but because I want to look really good. You see, our school has a pool party at the end of the year and I really want to wear a bikini to it so I can finally feel good about my weight in my life. Okay, so, I want to lose these 40 pounds in about 5-6 months. Is that possible if I really believe in myself and do the best that I can do to achieve my goal? I get home from school about 2:50 pm, and that’s when I go crazy on snacking. On a normal day I’ll have a cheese stick, chips, cookies, any of those types of things. And it’s easy to eat because I’m home alone and no one is watching me.
How can I stop eating so much unhealthy things after school and what will keep me focused enough to stay on track and do the best I can do to lose 40 pounds? My family has a treadmill, bike, and exercise ball in our basement because my parents want to become healthier too. My dad has already lost 80 pounds. I really look up to him because he hasn’t quit and he is very good at staying on track and finishing what he started. But I’m the exact opposite. I’m not very good at keeping on task with certain things, especially losing weight. Can you please tell me how I can stay on track and lose about 40 pounds in at most 6 months? Thank you so much and please help me at the best of your ability! Booke. [via Ask Questions]
It is certainly possible to lose 40 pounds in 5 months. To achieve this, one needs to lose 8 pounds a month for five consecutive months, or 2 pounds a week. It just so happens that the so-called weight-loss standard – i.e., the amount of weight a typical person can lose in a given time – is about 2 pounds a week, so your goal to lose 40 pounds in 5 months is very doable. Having said that, it is clear that your eating habits need to change. How can you stop snacking on bad stuff when you get home from school? The easiest way is simply not to have chips, cookies, etc in your house. You cannot snack on what you do not have. What else can you do? I suspect you are not eating a good breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast every morning is very important. It is your first meal of the day. It should be nutritious and it should keep you full until lunch.
