I hate intense exercising, and I am 20 pounds overweight and very out of shape. I had a knee injury 2 years ago that prevented me from running at all up until this year. I have a treadmill and an elliptical machine at home, but I can’t run on either because my lungs and leg muscles aren’t accustom to the hard work needed. I was hoping you could tell me how I can lose the weight, and strengthen my muscles and lungs. Celeste V [via Ask Questions]
People who try (unwisely) to lose 20 pounds in 1 month often use intense cardio and other exercises to lose weight as quickly as possible, but the truth is that you do not need to do cardio to lose weight. In fact, you can lose 20 pounds without any exercise at all. How can you lose weight without exercising? It simple: Focus on your diet. Why? Because exercise is overrated, but even if it is not overrated and misunderstood, you still do not need to run to lose weight. Why not? Because the best cardio exercise for weight loss is walking, not running.
So, walk to strengthen your lungs and muscles; to lose weight, focus on following a healthy diet (think a wide variety of lean and unprocessed protein, nonstarchy vegetables, berries, healthy fats, eggs, etc).
