Lactate Threshold Test

Lactate Threshold TestContinued from Resting Metabolic Rate.

Lactate Threshold The point at which lactate, a chemical by-product of exercise, accumulates faster than you can metabolize it; beyond this point, you quickly fatigue.

How it’s measured You do this one while riding on a high-tech stationary bike. Every three minutes the person administering the test cranks up the resistance. As you pedal, he pricks your finger and measures the amount of lactate in a drop of blood.

How it’s used This number is key to training for endurance sports, particularly cycling. Long, steady interval training – on average intervals of 10-20 minutes at just below your lactate threshold – can raise this number and allow you to perform harder for longer.
