How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Buzz off Travelers should be vigilant about malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

The CDC’s website will tell you if you need to take malaria tablets, but also consider spraying clothes and tents with the insecticide permethrin before you go (it’s available at camping stores). I also recommend applying an insect repellent with 30 percent DEET every eight hours.

Keep it clean Once you’re overseas, only drink bottled water with a seal you remove yourself. Stick to food that is served to you hot on the plate – nothing that’s been sitting around in a stall or a buffet – and eat only fruit you peel yourself.

Avoid lettuce and other uncooked vegetables altogether in countries where hygiene levels are generally low. Throw a bottle of Purell in your bag and use it before eating.

Stay aware Some health problems won’t appear until you are back home. If you have a fever, a rash, or gastrointestinal issues, make sure to tell your doctor where and when you were traveling.

And don’t forget to keep track of your vaccines – some require a booster several months after the initial injection. Follow up, now, and you’ll be protected for your next adventure.

Thanks for sharing these tips. I wasn’t careful enough on my last trip to Bali and lost 2 1/2 vacation days because I got sick. I think it was the raw veggies that got me…
