How to Prevent Anemia

If you are at risk for anemia and want to know how to prevent anemia, keep a close watch on your zinc intake. When women who had low iron reserves but were not yet anemic took 22 milligrams of zinc supplements daily for six weeks, they experienced a 35 percent drop in blood iron levels, according to a new study in the Journal of Nutrition.
Zinc and iron compete for absorption, researchers explain. You need only eight mg of zinc each day, so if you are taking a daily multivitamin (which has about 15 mg), avoid any additional supplements that contain the mineral.
Note: A zinc lozenge supplies about 13 milligrams – almost twice the RDA. [source: Fitness]
