You miscount calories. About 90 percent of Americans are not sure of how many calories they need daily. They are also unsure of how many calories they actually eat daily.

You skip fruit and veggies. Nearly 80 percent of people know that fruits and vegetables help their heart and can also help you maintain a healthy weight, yet only half ever eat them.

Solution You do not need to obsess over foods, but it is a good idea to limit your intake of refined carbs and sugar. Focus on stuff you can eat more of. Think protein, good fats, produce and whole rains.

You wait until lunch to nosh. Nearly half of people who are well aware of the fact that eating breakfast is key still skip it regularly.

Solution I almost want to say that eating anything for breakfast – a slice of last night’s pizza anyone? – is better than not eating at all, which is true to some extent. However, do not interpret it as an excuse to load up on junk food every morning.

If you do not have time to eat a proper breakfast, grab a protein shake or a quality protein bar or eat some fruit with yogurt.
