How to Bikini Wax

How to Bikini WaxContinued from The Bikini Line: Wax, Laser, or Electrolysis?

Mark Twain once said, “Man is the only animal that blushes….” Could it be because we’re the only creature who subjects our bikini line to a stranger? Not surprisingly, many women would rather do the deed in private.

And while cold-wax kits are fast and easy, most experts advise using heated wax. “The heat softens the follicle so the hairs pull out more easily,” says Lidia Tivichi, an aesthetician at the Kimara Ahnert salon, in New York City.

Frequent waxers may want to invest in a professional heating device from a beauty-supply store, while others may prefer an all-in-one kit — just pay attention when warming the wax.

“Reheat it in a microwave every five minutes, and stir frequently,” says Cindy Barshop, owner of the Completely Bare spas. One final sticking point: Don’t attempt a Brazilian wax at home. “Even pros don’t do Brazilians on themselves,” Barshop says.

Cleanse the area with a damp washcloth or a cotton pad soaked in toner, then blot dry. Sprinkle baby powder to soak up any remaining moisture, and tissue off excess.

Sit down on an old towel in front of a full-length mirror, with your legs stretched out in front of you. Bend one leg so the flat of your foot rests against the inside of the opposite knee.

Test the wax on the inside of your wrist—it should feel warm and be the consistency of honey. When it’s ready, dip the applicator tip in the tub and dole out a thin, inch-long layer of wax.

Start at the edge of the bent leg’s inner thigh. Spread wax in the direction of hair growth covering a one-by-three-inch area. Place a muslin strip over the wax, and press down.

Pull skin taut with one hand, then quickly yank the strip back in the opposite direction with the other hand. Repeat along each side of the bikini line, then finish with the top.

Straighten uneven edges with a small amount of wax, then tweeze strays. Remove excess wax with baby oil, wipe skin with a damp cloth, and apply an aloe-based lotion or gel. [via]
