Hemp: The Barely Legal Health Food

Hemp: The Barely Legal Health FoodThe U.S. is the only industrialized nation that bans hemp production.

Still, thanks to the weed’s growing reputation as an unbeatable source of protein and vitamins, palatable hemp products, made from seeds grown in Europe or Canada, are becoming more common here.

And they’re not just for hippies. “Hemp is a total package that offers fiber, plenty of vitamins and minerals, and optimum levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fats,” says environmental consultant and physicist Gero Leson, who has studied hemp for more than 13 years.

Even endurance athletes are catching on. “I use hemp primarily for recovery and meal replacement,” says top Canadian Ironman contender Jasper Blake. He eats up to four servings daily, usually in shakes or energy bars.

Fortunately, hemp’s minuscule 0.3 percent THC content (marijuana can have up to 20 percent) means it’s drug-test friendly. As Blake says, looking for THC in hemp is “like trying to find a baby chicken in a chocolate egg.”

The list of our favorite hemp health foods will be posted soon. [source]
