Healthy Juice

Healthy Juice

Is there such a thing as a healthy juice? Yes and no. According to a recent study – which was designed to determine the highest level of antioxidants in a number of different beverages including fruit juices – you should be drinking pomegranate juice.

But this and similar studies are misleading. Sure, fruit juices contain antioxidants, some contain a lot of them and some (think apple and orange juice) are not gifted in that department. So what determines whether or not a healthy juice is really healthy?

It does not matter how many antioxidants a juice contains. Why? Because a healthy juice is not really healthy if it contains a boatload of sugar and almost all commercially made fruit juices do contain a lot of sugar.

The bottom line: If you are concerned that you are not getting enough antioxidants in your diet, eat whole fruit. A whole fruit contains a lot more than just antioxidants. It contains fiber, which slows down sugar absorption, and numerous phytonutrients that fruit juices do not contain.
