Healthy Fast Food: Wendy’s Shows The Way
Healthy fast food, is that even possible? When I thought it was time to move to Denmark to enjoy a healthier version of my favorite fast foods, Wendy’s decided it was time to do something about it.
In the U.S., they are the first major fast-food company to start using trans-fat-free oil. According to their website, “breaded chicken sandwiches, nuggets and strips will have zero grams of trans fat.
Trans fat in French fries will range from 0g to 0.5g, and the nuggets and fries in the Kids menu will have zero grams of trans fat.
The use of non-hydrogenated oil offers even more benefits. In breaded chicken and French fries, it reduces saturated fat by 20%.
In addition, Wendy’s is working on total elimination of trans fats from their menu. All of this is great news, but here comes a loaded question - is non-hydrogenated oil healthy?
Wendy’s non-hydrogenated oil of choice comes from a blend of corn and soy oil. Putting soy issues aside, this blend is very high in Omega-6 fatty acids, but there is no shortage of Omega-6 fat in our diet.
There is a good body of evidence indicating that over consumption of Omega-6 fat, relative to Omega-3 fatty acids, is one of the important factors contributing to a development of cancer and heart disease.
There is no doubt that the use of non-hydrogenated oil is a good first step in making fast food healthier.
However, I hope Wendy’s will continue to use innovation to further improve nutritional quality of their food products, and doing so will encourage other companies to do the same.
