Health Benefits of Red Wine

Health Benefits of Red WineWhat are the health benefits of red wine? Research shows that certain naturally occurring chemical compounds found in red wine could explain the so-called “French paradox”, the apparent lower rates of heart disease in French population, despite a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

While the “French paradox” has been disputed by other studies, some scientists claim that the health benefits of red wine are due to resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine, mulberries, peanuts and grapes.

According to Eating Fabulous, a moderate consumption of red wine can prevent stroke, if the benefits of resveratrol in rodent studies translate to humans. Personally, I think that the health benefits of red wine are self-evident.

I am probably wrong, but how can anyone doubt the health benefits of red wine given the sheer bliss of having a glass of it with a homemade dinner? Ah, the joy! It seems, just thinking about it makes me healthier.

Okay, maybe to conclusively prove the health benefits of red wine, we need additional scientific studies. But what about the health benefits of alcohol in general? Is it not a common knowledge that moderate intake of alcohol is beneficial for most people?

Well, I guess it all depends. For instance, tequila drinkers swear by its many “health benefits”, including but not necessarily limited to mood elevation, feeling better about themselves and life in general.

However, it is worth noting that the consumption of alcohol could have hilarious consequences, and this short tequila “commercial” - although not related to the health benefits of red wine - is a sober reminder keenly explains exactly what happens when alcohol consumption goes awry.

Oh yes, I certainly do agree that knowing the health benefits of red wine make it that more a delight to drink!

I recently discovered that red wine contains an anti-cancer substance called Acutissimin A which combats growth of cancer tumors in women. Apparently, Acutissimin A is formed when red wine interacts with oak during the ageing process. Who knew!

I actually read the information on The Wine Diva website. The Wine Diva (for those who don't know her) is a fabulous resource for info on wine! In fact she just put out a book called Secrets from The Wine Diva. It contains all these tips on buying, ordering and ENJOYING wine!

If you have time, check it out!
