It isn’t the vertical stripes that make refs look lean. Officiating a basketball game provides a workout on a par with playing hoops, reveals a new study in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

Over the course of eight games, seven refs averaged a heart rate of 150 beats per minute (79 percent of their max), burning approximately 933 calories every four quarters. That’s as strenuous as doing the dribbling, says the study’s author, Anthony Leicht, Ph.D. The intensity of basketball makes refereeing great for getting in shape, he says.
