Fruit Nutrition

Fruit NutritionFruit nutrition could be fun. You can rate different fruits by a number of nutritional variables – fiber, carbohydrates, protein, fat, and others. But how do you know which fruit is healthiest?

Well, that is a loaded question, because it is hard to single out just one “healthy” component in fruits. They are all healthy.

Yet, some experts point out that when it comes to fruit nutrition – we tend to overlook one important element – antioxidants. It is easy to understand why we do. Have you ever seen the amount of antioxidants listed on the nutritional labels?

We know that fruits are loaded with antioxidants. When it comes to antioxidant supplements, more is not always better, but with fruits, it is the opposite. One could argue that fruits with higher antioxidant content are healthier.

In fact, a number of scientific studies came to the same conclusion. Thanks to USDA, here is how fruits rank according to total antioxidants per serving.

Blueberries – 13,427
Cranberries – 8,983
Blackberries – 7,701
Raspberries – 6,058
Strawberries – 5,938
Apples – 5,900
Cherries – 4,873
Plums – 4,844
Avocados – 3,344
Pears – 3,172

Although the blueberries are clear winners here, it does not mean we should neglect other fruits, because variety of fruits [and vegetables] is a key component of a healthy diet.
