Feed a Fever, Starve a Cold

You may have also heard this saying as “starve a fever, feed a cold,” but it doesn’t matter, because both ways are erroneous.

Believed to be used as early as 1574, the saying is thought to stem from the idea that feeding your body would help it heat up and fight the chills of a cold, while starving a fever would help your body cool down.

However, viruses cause colds and fevers, and your body needs energy to fight them.

The Waiting Pool

Despite the seemingly universal warning from parents, it’s okay to take a dip right after eating. The thinking behind the long-held myth claims you could get a severe muscle cramp and drown while swimming on a full stomach.

“There is no evidence that drowning or water accidents are linked in any way to the time of eating,” says Dr. S.B. Beerman, medical committee chairperson for the International Life Saving Federation.
