Emotional Eating Dos and Don’ts

Continued from How to Stop Emotional Eating.
It is hard to combat an emotional eating because it is not easy to deal with emotions and feelings that certain foods can trigger. It is even harder – and frankly unnecessary – to completely avoid indulging our cravings.
So, how can one deal with emotional eating? The key to success lies in knowing how to indulge without overdoing it, and here are some tips on how to accomplish just that from nutritionist Alexa Fishback:
Do choose healthy options when in need of a pick-me-up. Try a turkey burger instead of a hamburger or dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.
Do not go for a really sugary drink, which provides a quick energy boost but causes the body to crash soon after.
Do drink tons of water. “Water provides oxygen to the brain, giving you a feeling of happiness,” says Fishback.
Do not forget that there are guilt-free ways to indulge. “If you’re going to eat pizza, just skip the extra cheese and pepperoni,” explains Fishback, who suggests loading a slice with veggies instead.
Do get up off the couch when feeling down. “Going out and getting some fresh air is definitely a mind booster. It always makes us feel better,” says Fishback. [via]
