Does Water Add Weight?

I recently started a diet and have started drinking plenty of water.

My question is does water add weight if consumed before weighing in. We have heard both sides and need expert advice

We’re having a contest at work and are all motivated but not sure of the above question.

Thank you for any advice you can give. [via Ask Questions]

Anything you consume before a weigh-in, adds weight and water is no exception. It is not going to add 5 or 10 pounds to your weight, unless you have water retention issues, but it might add anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds, it all depends on how much water you drink before a weigh-in.

Also, your body has a tendency to retain water, but if your body functions properly, it gets rid of water rather quickly. Some people, who are considerably overweight, are known to have water retention issues. Most people, however, do not need to worry about it.

In addition, while staying hydrated is very important, if you are not thirsty you do not need to force yourself to drink water.
