Diet for ADHD: ADHD and Diet

Diet for ADHD: ADHD and DietMany diets out there offer miracle cures for a variety of medical conditions. So, it should come as no surprise that one can find an assortment of diets for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.)

Some argue that there is clear connection between ADHD and diet habits. But most researchers have not been able to find a diet for ADHD which actually works.

However, for the first time, researchers have confirmed a link that parents, teachers, and many ADHD support groups have long suspected.

The new study shows that some artificial additives increase hyperactivity, inattention, impulsivity, and shortened attention span, not only in children identified as having ADHD but also in the general population.

The six-week trial followed several hundred three-year-olds and eight- to nine-year-olds who were given drinks containing color additives and sodium benzoate, a common preservative. A control group received additive-free placebo drinks. All were evaluated for hyperactivity and inattention by parents, teachers (for school-age subjects), and a computer program.

Neither researchers nor subjects knew which beverage each child had received. Children in both age groups who got the drink with additives were significantly less attentive and more hyperactive, a combination which can negatively affect learning ability. [source: Taste for Life]
