Don’t be fooled by the label — some of these so-called healthy items just can’t live up to their reputation.

In the Morning

Packed with nuts and oats, muffins are often thought to be healthy, but they are high on the glycemic index (GI), ranging from a homemade muffin at 44 and a corn muffin at 102 (an apple has only 28).

What is the GI you ask? The GI ranks carbs on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating.

Choosing low GI carbs is the secret to long-term health and the key to keeping the pounds off.

Recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health indicate that the risks of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease are strongly related to the GI of the overall diet.
