In qualifying for Beijing, Dara Torres set a new U.S. record in the 50-meter freestyle. The secret to her success? She has cut back on her swimming.

Dara Torres’ training and workout Torres, who will be competing in two relays (the 4×100 freestyle and the 4×100 medley) along with the 50 freestyle, concentrates on stretching, massage and weight lifting with a team of seven coaches and trainers. ‘At 41, recovery is the biggest word in my vocabulary,” she says.

The routine: Three times a week for two hours and before and after races, two trainers mash, flex and prod her 6-ft, 149-lb. frame like pizza dough. In the weight room, she uses a balance ball to exercise her core.

The results: “I’m 12 lbs. lighter than when I competed in the 2000 Olympics.”
