Cure for Puffy Eyes

1. If you don’t have tea bags or an eye mask, crush a few ice cubes until fine and pour into two small plastic bags. Wrap each in a towel and place over each eye.

2. Have iced coffee instead of a hot beverage, “which causes blood vessels to dilate and increases swelling,” says Santa Monica dermatologist Ava T. Shamban.

3. Don’t linger in a hot shower. “Steam draws blood to the skin, which can worsen the problem,” says New York City and Miami dermatologist Fredric Brandt.

4. A great depuffing exercise: Using the flats of your fingers on both hands, gently massage your skin in circular motions, pushing it slightly upward. Start at your sinuses and work your way out along your cheeks and undereye area.

Repeat five times. The kneading helps to push the built-up fluid out of the tissue so it drains faster.

5. Avoid using an eye serum with hyaluronic acid when skin is puffy — “The ingredient binds water to the skin, which plumps it,” Shamban says.

6. Until the swelling subsides, avoid products that contain exfoliating ingredients, such as alpha hydroxy acids (a.k.a. glycolic acid or lactic acid), salicylic acid, and retinoids. Even the lightest amount of exfoliation can irritate skin and exacerbate swelling.
