Coleen McLoughlin: Diet, Size Zero, & Body Image
“All this size zero stuff doesn’t interest me at all,” says Coleen McLoughlin in her recent interview with Cosmopolitan (UK edition), in which she also talks about her body image, diet and a lot more.
Who are your style icons?
“I love Lindsay Lohan’s and Nicole Richie’s style, but they’re from LA and it’s summer all year round there, so it’s hard for us to copy what they wear day to day.
In terms of British girls, I think Cat Deeley dresses brilliantly; she does casual and glamorous really well. Also Kate Moss – everyone loves her.
She can throw on anything and look incredible. I’m not that kind of girl; I have to try a bit harder to make an outfit work. I’d love to ask her how she does it”
What do you think about the current size zero debate?
“Weight’s a really touchy issue. There’s endless comment in the papers right now about it. To be honest, I think as long as you’re happy, comfortable with yourself and healthy, that’s the main thing.
All this size zero stuff doesn’t interest me at all; if the girls are healthy, so be it.”
How healthy is your body image?
“I wouldn’t say, ‘I absolutely love my body’ because I don’t think anyone does. I’m happy, comfortable and healthy. I do sometimes pile on a few pounds but I think that’s normal.
Last summer, I put on a little weight and just because I was photographed putting my hair up with my belly sticking out, according to the papers I was pregnant. No one can hold their posture all the time, especially when you’re on the beach.”
How do you deal with reading those kinds of comments?
“I just laugh. If you believe the papers, I’ve been pregnant so many times I should have 20 kids already! I’ve also married Wayne [Rooney] about four times.
At first, you’re a bit annoyed reading those things but in the end the people around you, the people who care about you, know the truth and that’s all that counts.
I eat healthily during the week but Wayne is away most weekends, so I’ll have a night out with the girls; that’s usually my downfall because we’ll get a takeaway pizza or go out for a meal.
But I wouldn’t say that’s unhealthy. My dad always says as long as you balance your diet, a few pieces of pizza once a week won’t kill you.”
The truth is, you’re tiny. Is it strange being labelled a ‘curvy’ celebrity?
“I was on the cover of one magazine a few weeks ago and they said I was getting fatter. But paparazzi pictures never do you any justice; the photographers jump out in front of you, and who’s going to look good then?
When I first started being papped, occasionally it was annoying but I never let it get to me. If someone close to me said, ‘You look awful’ that would upset me more.
The papers always go back on their word anyway; one week you’re looking great and the next you’re fat.”
