The winter season is almost here. That is good news. I like winter, but I do not like colds. According to Men’s Health magazine, these cold remedies claim to be the answer.
Vitamin C
The research: Taking 500 milligrams (mg) daily may lower your risk of catching a cold by 66 percent.
The verdict: Swallow some. A true virus-fighter, says Keith DeOrio, M.D., a Men’s Health alternative-medicine advisor.
Echinacea
The research: A new definitive study found that it didn’t prevent or alleviate cold symptoms.
The verdict: Skip it, especially large doses. “Too much can weaken your immune system,” says Dr. DeOrio.
Cold-Eeze
The research: Taking zinc shortens the duration of cold symptoms and lessens their severity.
The verdict: Start sucking at the first sign of a sore throat, says Dr. DeOrio, and take three daily until you feel better.
Zicam
The research: People who use it recover 2 days sooner, according to a Cleveland Clinic study.
The verdict: Snort it twice daily, starting as soon as possible. Stop 2 days after symptoms dissipate, says Dr. DeOrio.
Airborne
The research: Several of the ingredients have proven effective, but the value of the combination is still unknown.
The verdict: Leave it–for now. But Airborne may prove to be a viable cold-fighter, says Dr. DeOrio. And because it’s effervescent, it’s easily absorbed.
