Coffee and Cancer

Coffee and CancerIf you are planning a trip to the Caribbean this summer, or any other place that has a lot of sun during this time of the year, you might want to consider swapping your bottle of water with a cup of coffee.

New research from Rutgers University shows that the combination of exercise and caffeine could help destroy precancerous skin cells. In the study, mice that were given caffeinated water (equal to one or two cups of coffee per day) while exercising and were then exposed to UVB rays showed a 400 percent increase in the destruction of precancerous cells, compared with decaf mice exposed to the cancer-causing rays.

The study also found smaller risk reductions in caffeine-only or exercise-only mice. “The results are encouraging, but clinical trials in humans are still needed,” says Allan Conney, director of Rutgers’ Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research and lead researcher of the study. [source: Health]
